PC OpenType - Installment 004: AL297ET is my carplate number.
I have typeset a fake carplate using my typeface Pragmata and attached it to the lower side of the luggage van of my car, slightly above the real plate.
Letters and numerals have been enlarged in order to make the carplate number more visible and readable, even at great distance.
It can be said a first level of interpretation lies in the desire to tickle the observer's curiosity, which would probably notice the small text under the carplate number ("a public service to citizens offered by FSD"), and the inivitation to make a visit to the website, understanding this as an unusual form of advertising.
A second level lies in the AL297ET "tour dates" published on the website. At this point, it should be clear the operation goes beyond the boudaries of mere advertising to become a promotional tool for the typeface sales, addressing its function with an artistic flavor. If the carplate is not sequestrated, damaged or stolen it will be auctioned on a later date.
The enlarged carplate number wishes to be an expression of dissent towards the choices of the Italian government related to the limitations of car circulation in order to reduce atmospheric pollution. Everyone knows the only effective way to solve this problem lies in the suppression of internal-combustion engines, or at least in the promotion of less-polluting combustibles, like the biodiesel.
The installation of optical reading systems installed by administrations (within the ZTL, Italian acronym for "Reduced Traffic Zone") will read better my enlarged plate, but they'll never effectively solve the pollution problems. [Details]

PC OpenType - Installazione 004: AL297ET è il numero di targa della mia auto.
L'ho ricomposto usando il mio font Pragmata e l'ho attaccato nella parte inferiore del bagagliaio della mia auto, qualche centimetro al di sopra della vera targa. Le lettere e i numeri della targa ricomposta sono stati ingranditi allo scopo di rendere più visibile e leggibile il mio numero di targa anche a notevole distanza.
Ad un primo livello d'interpretazione l'operazione in sé ha lo scopo di incuriosire l'osservatore. Questi, dopo aver notato che sotto al numero di targa si legge "Servizio alla cittadinanza offerto da FSD" e l'invito a visitare il sito, ha gli elementi necessari per capire che si tratta di una forma inconsueta di pubblicità.
Sul sito però vengono pubblicate le "date del tour" AL297ET e a questo punto si dovrebbe comprendere che l'operazione sconfina dagli ambiti pubblicitari diventando una forma di promozione del font in forma artistica.
Se non verrà sequestrata, danneggiata o rubata la finta-targa verrà in seguito messa all'asta.
Il numero di targa ingigantito vuole essere una dimostrazione di dissenso nei confronti delle scelte di limitazione della circolazione automobilistica nelle città allo scopo di ridurre l'inquinamento atmosferico. Tutti sanno benissimo che l'unica soluzione veramente efficace al problema passa solo attraverso l'abbandono della produzione dei veicoli con motore a scoppio, o almeno attraverso la promozione di forme meno inquinanti di combustibili, come il biodiesel.
L'installazione di sistemi di lettura ottica delle targhe disposti dalle amministrazioni comunali (ZTL, acronimo di "Zona a Traffico Limitato") potranno rilevare meglio la mia targa gigante, ma non risolveranno mai il problema dell'inquinamento. [Dettagli]
